Test-Taking Hint

When you don’t feel confident about an answer, and have time, try solving it a different way. That way, you are less likely to make the same mistake twice.

Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic expressions use variables, usually letters, to represent unknown numbers, or numbers that change.

Each month Yoki deposits exactly $125 into his savings account. Write an expression for the total amount of money Yoki has deposited into his savings account.

Step 1: The number of months Yoki has deposited money into his account is not known. Choose a variable to represent the number of months. You can use the first letter of a word as a variable to help you remember what a variable stands for.

Let m = number of months

Step 2: Each month Yoki deposits the same amount. The total amount is found by multiplying the amount per month by the number of months.

amount per month times number of months

Step 3: Replace the words with numbers, operations symbols, and variables.

125 × m

In algebra, the symbol for multiplication can easily be confused for the letter x. When there is no symbol between parts of an expression, multiplication is understood. Write this expression without the multiplication symbol.
